Nine Steps to Selecting
the Perfect Crewed Yacht Charter

1. AGREE WHEN YOU WOULD LIKE TO GO
Knowing when you plan to take your vacation will help determine the cruising area. As well as holiday times, your decision may be influenced by the weather, prices and availability.

2. WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO?
It is possible to charter a yacht almost anywhere in the world, with the Caribbean (especially the BVI) being the most popular.

3.WHAT TYPE OF VACATION WOULD YOU LIKE?
Active and on the go….or chilled out? Is this a family holiday or a romantic break? These decisions will help us select the best yacht and crew for you.

4. BUDGET
Financial control is an important aspect in planning your vacation and we will endeavour to get you the best value for your money. Where budget isn’t a restriction, we are able to recommend some of the most luxurious yachts in the world.

On a crewed yacht, generally speaking for a party of 4 / 8 people a figure of US$1,500 to US$2,500 per head will secure you a nice boat with private cabins, en suite facilities and air conditioning. In the Caribbean this may include all your food and drink and the use of the various water sports equipment the boat has for your enjoyment. These figures are for guidance only and once you get into the luxury end of the market generalization becomes difficult.

Terms of charter in the Mediterranean tend to be different since the price quoted is for the boat only. To this you would normally be asked to pay an additional 20-30% advanced provisioning allowance (APA) depending upon the type of yacht you are chartering. This would be used to provide all the food and drink and also the fuel that the yacht uses. Then depending upon where you charter there will be the tax to pay and that varies from 4% in Greece to 20% in France. This tax is levied on the cost of the boat only and not on the provisioning. Other than a daily rate of up to $4 per head per day no tax is payable in the Virgin Islands. One other consideration for your budget is crew gratuity. Whilst this isn’t compulsory and is entirely up to you, it is generally 10-20% of the charter rate, depending on level of service received.

5. WHAT STYLE OF CHARTER?
Crewed? Bareboat? Captain only? These are all available on sailing and motor yachts.

6. YOUR CHOICES
Once we know your answers to the above questions, we can then present you with a shortlist of recommended yachts and crews.

7. BOOK YOUR YACHT
When you are happy with your selection we will put a working hold on the diary of your chosen yacht. We then send you a contract so you have the security of a legally binding document.

We want you to be confident about who has your money. Once you sign the contract (which we will send you and is between yourself and the yacht captain/owner) and your deposit is received, it will be held in Escrow until just before the charter when it will be released to the boat. Your vacation of a lifetime is then booked!!

If you make your reservation more than six months in advance, the charter deposit is 25% with the other 25% due at the six month mark. Within six months, you make a single deposit of 50%. In most cases you’ll pay the balance of your charter 45 days prior to the start of your charter, although some yachts will let you pay with cash, or travellers cheques upon boarding your yacht. Once you’ve confirmed your charter and paid your deposit, most charter contracts can only be cancelled if the yacht is able to re-book the same charter dates with another party. If this happens your deposit is returned less a $100 handling charge, but if the boat cannot re-book the dates, you lose your entire deposit. Because of this, we recommend Trip Cancellation Insurance, which will provide your refund under covered conditions.
